New shopping centers are opening rapidly to serve China's increasingly prosper- ous population, but finding qualified people to run them can be challenging. To help train those who will staff these properties, ICSC has launched the China Institute for Retail Real Estate Educa- tion, which offers courses on every aspect of shopping center management. About 30 executives from a range of companies in the Chinese retail real estate industry at- tended the opening course in August, a two-day event fo- cusing on asset management. ICSC linked up with Leiden Education, an affiliate of Peking University, at a learning center in Shanghai. Up to a half dozen similar courses will be offered next year in Shanghai and other cities where Leiden has offices. The institute provides midlevel and senior executives with instruction in best practices across several disciplines, in- cluding leasing and financial management. "There's a huge need in China, because they have this exploding shopping center industry," said Eric Hertz, senior staff vice president of education at ICSC. "It marks a new stage in ICSC's initia- tive to establish transformative retail real estate education programs in China." The week beginning Oct. 19, 2014, has been designated Next GENerosity Week, during which all Next Gen local programs in North America will earmark a portion of their registration fees for the Capital Campaign Fund, with an eye to raising $75,000 by the end of the month. The ICSC Foundation, which supports education in the retail real estate field, has spent $800,000 on pro- grams that benefited nearly 300 award recipients since 2007. The foundation is now in the midst of its first Capital Campaign to raise $5 million for its vari- ous programs, and, notably, scholarships to help the Next Gen community. "Next GENerosity's goals are to educate the next generation about the importance of giving back to our industry and to raise money for the ICSC Founda- tion Campaign," said Adam Moschin, vice president of leasing at Chicago-based Clark Street Development. Moschin is the liaison on the ICSC Foundation's board of directors and a member of the Next Genera- tion Leadership Board. "The $5 million campaign will provide funds for real estate education to undergraduate and graduate-level students as well as those early in their careers. Next GENer- osity has garnered tremen- dous support from the Next Generation community with over 40 commitments from Next Generation committees to host fundraising events during the week of October 20th to the 24th." '' Next Gen will raise funds for the ICSC Foundation at more than 40 events during the week of Oct. 19.
