his attention to Mexico, whose shopping center industry was in its infancy, and became one of the industry's leading experts in the market. There he orchestrated the first J.C. Penney and Dillard's leases in that country. He also oversaw the real estate operations of Sears de Mexico through the mid-1990s. "Buddy was ahead of his time," said David Zoba, an ICSC trustee and chairman of Jones Lang LaSalle's global retail leas- ing board. He notes that Herring always stressed the importance of regular networking through ICSC, and recalls Herring as one of the most driven, hardest-working people he has known. Indeed, he was as driven as ever when he shifted his focus from Mexico back to the U.S. in the late '90s, as big-box chains and lifestyle centers began to proliferate. He continued to de- velop regional malls, but broadened his ef- forts to include power and lifestyle centers and later mixed-use projects. "Buddy is a guy who has crossed over dramatic changes in the shopping center in- dustry," said Patrick S. Donahue, an ICSC past trustee and president and CEO of Do- nahue Scriber Realty Group, Costa Mesa, Calif. Donahue says Herring had staying power, largely because he never stopped learning, and embraced change. "Buddy's involvement in ICSC personifies the mis- sion of the organization," said Donahue. Indeed, Herring saw ICSC as a forum for continuous learning. He joined the ICSC board in 1979 and served as its 23rd chairman from 1982 to 1983. He then served on the board's executive committee for an additional five years beyond that. "Buddy's ICSC contributions are many and of long-standing impact on the organization," said John T. Riordan, who was ICSC president and CEO for 15 years, until 2001. As chairman, Herring helped establish the Leasing Mall at what was then called the ICSC Spring Convention (today RE- Con), in Las Vegas, and he also helped organize what became known as the Stra- tegic Leadership Conference, an annual gathering in Washington, D.C., that al- lows ICSC members to lobby Congress. "Buddy remained throughout my tenure at ICSC and beyond a thoughtful adviser and, as a consequence, a great and support- ive friend," said Riordan. "Hundreds of pro- fessionals throughout the business saw him in the same light." Among those he influenced are his two children, Heather and Gar. Gar Herring, CRX, CDP, is president and CEO of The MGHerring Group and an ICSC trustee. Heather Herring Stanton, CMD, is corporate communications and marketing director of MGHerring Group. She has been involved with ICSC's Next Generation Program and served on the board of the ICSC Foundation. Besides his children, Herring is survived by his wife, Edna, who is vice president of administration and secretary-treasurer at MGHerring Group, and three grandchildren.
