J u n e 2 0 1 5 / S C T 23 ustomers looking for Carhartt apparel have shopped for its wares in various venues, from local hardware stores to national retailers like Dick's sporting goods or Bass Pro shops. now customers may also peruse the whole range of apparel in a growing chain of Carhartt stores. this premium work- wear company, doing business since Hamilton Carhartt founded it in 1889, has adhered to its original mission through two turns of cen- turies: namely, manu facturing quality top-to-bottom clothing — hats to work boots — for men and women, on and off the job. in par- ticular, the premium work-wear company has built a loyal follow- ing among tradespeople, farmers, contractors and outdoors enthusi- asts. the Dearborn, mich.–based company, still privately held, to- day employs roughly 5,000 work- very diverse — we go from the hardware store or farm supply store all the way through national sporting goods retail stores," said Jamie millar, Carhartt's vice president of retail. Carhartt launched its first retail units five years ago and has been steadily nurturing that network of stores since. the company opened its 17th store in April, in suburban milwaukee. A flagship is set to open in early summer in mid- town Detroit, followed by a store at the maine mall, in Portland, in midsummer. the company has five more stores in the pipeline that it expects to open by the end of the year, and eight additional stores are planned for next year. typically, they measure about 3,500 square feet, though some are nearly 6,300 square feet.
