I CSC members visited 240 congressional offices during the Strategic Leadership Summit, in Washington, in June, and the results were immediate: Several additional lawmakers signed on to the Remote Transactions Parity Act (H.R.2193), bringing to 30 the number of co-sponsors of this e-fairness bill. Our members also spoke directly to legislators about the need to improve the Americans with Disabilities Act and the importance of sensible tax reform. These annual face-to-face meetings between our members and their representatives play a critical role in promoting and protecting our industry's interests in Washington. Your voice matters with elected officials, and because of this, we are expanding our public-policy program to include year-round, direct interactions with local leaders and our members under our new Key Contact Program. The program, led by our new Grassroots director, Michael Garrison, will strategically position ICSC members with legislators in order to raise awareness about the importance of our industry and the policy issues that impact it. Lawmakers will be invited on property tours and to other events to help them appreciate how retail real estate builds communities, fuels economies and inspires innovation. When lawmakers return from their August recess for the 2017–2018 term, we will continue to take every opportunity to address the key issues facing our industry. And because the prominence of our voice in the public-policy arena and our presence in Washington are critical, we will be holding September's Board of Trustees meeting there as well. As I have said before, ICSC's volunteers are the backbone of this organization. I am grateful for your efforts at this most recent Strategic Leadership Conference, and I encourage you to take part in our Key Contact Program. With your help, we can influence those in Washington to enact policies that respect our industry.
