L ast month ICSC hosted an inaugural event in Austin, Texas, devoted to the role of food-and-beverage in retail real estate. The idea for the Food for Thought Conference came from conversations with many of you, our members, about the trends in the industry and what retail real estate will look like five years from now. For the first time ever, in March 2015, U.S. restaurant sales eclipsed grocery store sales, a signal of the growing popularity of food service. In the U.K. and the U.S., the amount of space dedicated to food-and-beverage is forecast to reach up to 20 percent or more of total space by 2025. In Asia as much as 30 percent of the space is currently dedicated to food-and-beverage. The increasing popularity of dining out is revitalizing shopping centers around the globe and proving once again the critical role that retail real estate plays in building communities and fueling economies. Recently, we've seen a shift in the types of food service offerings available as well as significant growth in the amount of space allocated to grocery stores and eateries. ICSC's latest research, The Successful Integration of Food & Beverage Within Retail Real Estate, addresses the current landscape and these trends. More importantly, it analyzes the challenges, risks and opportunities associated with this growing sector, in order to provide you with guidance and insight into our industry. Retail real estate is constantly evolving, yet the pace of change has increased rapidly over the past decade. New players quickly come on the scene, as we have witnessed with the 21st-century food halls, food markets and craft breweries being brought into centers around the globe in the past few years. The nimbleness and flexibility of our members is admirable. We look forward to continuing to serve our members by providing perspectives from global industry leaders and the latest research into industry trends through events such as Food for Thought and research initiatives like The Successful Integration of Food & Beverage Within Retail Real Estate.
