Perhaps surprisingly, however, the 24-year-old acknowledges that he did not exactly jump at the opportunity. He was thinking that the fellowship would be something he might like to apply to — someday, in the very far future. "I actually de- leted the email," he confessed. Five minutes later, Homas GeorGe Bolen III was busy at his desk when an email containing an application for the Fiala Fellowship popped up in his inbox. Bolen, a business develop- ment specialist at Crossman & Co., was familiar with the fellow- ship. Created in honor of mary lou Fiala, former president and Coo of regency Centers Corp. and an ICsC past chairman, the yearly award is granted to an outstand- ing real estate professional under the age of 35 whom the ICsC Foundation believes has potential to make a lasting contribution to the industry. The fellowship offers funding to help support an industry-related project of the recipient's conception, a year of men- toring from an industry leader, and an op- portunity to speak at reCon, among other opportunities and benefits. Crossman & Co. President John Cross- man forwarded the application. "You have to apply to this," he wrote. since he began the job full time at Crossman & Co. in 2014, Bolen has worked on marketing and retail strategy for such clients as metlife and Florida Hospital Health Village. "He under- stands opportunities, and he understands people," said Crossman, who has known Bolen since the latter's freshman year at Florida a&m University in 2009. "He has every single possible intangible that you'd want someone to have to be suc- cessful."
