hopping centers in popular destinations are reaping the benefits of a global uptick in tourism, experts say. americans traveling within the u.s. spent record amounts last year on lodging and air travel, according to sarah Quinlan, senior vice president of market insights at Mastercard advisors. the company's monthly spendingpulse report has tracked key tourism barometers for the past 12 years. Meanwhile, during the fis- cal year ended this past september, the u.s. saw a 1.8 percent jump in consumer airline ticket sales and a 3.8 percent increase in consumer lodging sales, according to Mastercard. travel last year to europe, asia, central america and the caribbean was robust too, ac- cording to the united nations' World tourism organization. in a January report the agency announced that international tourist arrivals, defined as anyone arriving at a destination to stay overnight, had grown by 4.4 percent in 2015 to about 1.2 billion. this amounted to an additional 50 million overnight visitors traveling globally versus 2014. it was the sixth con- secutive year of above average growth, with international arrivals increasing by 4 percent or more each year since 2010, according to the agency. naturally, the owners of retail properties in tourist destinations pay close attention to such trends. taubman centers, for one, tracks the role of tourists in its portfolio through
