CREATING TENANTS LANDLORDS FIND NEW WAYS TO ENCOURAGE FRANCHISEES AND FILL SPACE By Renée DeGross Valdés HOPPING CENTER OWNERS ARE FINDING THAT attracting franchisees to the smaller retail spaces is tough in this econ- omy. Bankruptcies and attrition have left many vacancies in their wake, which cuts right to the bottom line. Owing to prolonged va- cancies, shopping center landlords have intensified their efforts to market these small spaces (those measuring less than 10,000 square feet). They feel pushed to try bold things. DDR Corp., Kimco Realty Corp. and Weingarten Realty Investors have launched programs to draw fran- chisers and other entrepreneurs to these spaces. Kimco's FastTrack Franchise, an online database the firm created in January, helps franchisers find locations. "It helps the site-selection process," said Brett Cooper, 162 SCT / MAY 2012
