R E T A I L I N G T O D A Y The American way WALMART SAYS IT WILL INVEST IN U.S. VETERANS AND PRODUCTS W By Brannon Boswell AL-MART STORES SAYS it plans to source more of its merchandise domestically, to help returning military veterans find jobs and to enable part-time employees to become full-timers with benefits. "We want all of our associates to find the career opportunities they want with Walmart," said Bill Simon, Walmart U.S. president and CEO, at a conference early this year. "We 12 SC T / M A R C H 2 0 1 3 will make sure part-time associates have full visibility into full-time job openings in their stores and nearby stores, and that they always have first shot at those jobs. We will also bring more transparency to our scheduling system so parttime workers can choose more hours for themselves." Walmart says its flagship and Sam's Club stores will be purchasing an additional $50 billion worth of U.S.made products over the next 10 years. The company also plans to boost U.S. manufacturing by increasing the volumes of products it already purchases here and by helping restore greater production of textiles, furniture and highend appliances here.
