52 S C T / S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 8 W hen David Brown first began working in specialty leasing, he could perhaps not have imagined the enormity of what he was onto. It was the early 1990s, and Brown had just landed a job as an assistant manager at North Star Mall, in San Antonio, where specialty leasing was only one of his many duties. "The general manager felt it was a great opportunity for me to dip my toes into the leasing arena," said Brown, who worked at the North Star Dillard's store before being hired by the mall's then-owner, the for- mer Rouse Co., as assistant general manager. Not long after taking the job, Brown discovered that he had both a passion and a talent for spe- cialty leasing, which was still in its infancy at the time. He went on to oversee specialty leasing for several malls owned by Rouse, a pioneer in the field. "I just loved the pace of it," Brown said. "Deals move quickly and trends also move very quickly. Having that department-store back- ground, I really loved working with tenants, all the way from the nation- als to entrepreneurs. For me, there's nothing better than knowing you have helped someone succeed and watching their business flourish."
