"I've got to believe that with all the recycling we did and the oper- able skylight and the initiatives like low water usage, it's got to be the greenest regional center in the country that I'm aware of," said Loch. "If it isn't, I'd like to visit the one that is." City Creek Center — this year's only regional shopping center opening in the U.S. — is a joint effort between Taubman and City Creek Reserve, the real estate development arm of the Mormon Church. The entire project, including residential buildings, sits on 23 acres spread over three city blocks just south of Temple Square. City Creek illustrates how far retail developers are willing to go to make their projects sustainable without being told to do so by a government agency.
