A M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T Something to celebrate Dear ICSC Member: T here is always excitement and anticipation as we approach this busiest shopping season of the year. Hot on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes the New York National Deal Making, the second-biggest retail real estate event in the world after RECon. The New York National Deal Making pre-registration is well ahead of 2015; with our move to the Jacob Javits Center a few years ago, attendance has risen in each of the past several years. This year you'll find more people at the show, and next year we plan to expand our space even further. Also this season, in keeping with our strategic priority of becoming a preeminent voice for the industry, we will analyze consumer spending and shopping habits, disseminating our find- ings among the media and influencers, and with you. Over the next couple of months, I will continue to meet with re- porters and editorial boards, making sure they appreciate the significance of our numbers and the importance of brick- and-mortar as well as the industry more broadly. They'll be hearing one statistic in par- ticular: For all the attention given to on- line retail, in 2015 e-commerce sales only comprised 7 percent of the $4.6 trillion in total U.S. retail sales, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Furthermore, on- line sales growth has been slowing, and over the past year we have seen one e-tailer after another opening physical stores. (For more facts and figures on e-commerce, you can read the recently released ICSC Research report, Decon- structing the Census Bureau's Retail Trade E-Commerce Figures, at icsc.org.) A few minutes spent inside the average store or shopping center in the coming weeks will tell us all we need to know about the health of physical retail, namely that there's a lot to be excited about. I'm looking forward to sharing our story this holiday season and looking forward to seeing many of you at the New York National Deal Making. Tom McGee ICSC President and CEO
