Liebes- kind Berlin already had about 40 stand- alone stores at the time of the buyout, and more are likely to be on the way. Since the buyout, s.Oliver has moved quickly to make the label part of its brand family, bringing in a new creative director and replacing the three found- ers with a fresh executive team. The company did not respond to requests for comment about any other plans, but if they stick to the standard s.Oliver playbook, the next step may well be expansion through franchised and company-funded shops. With s.Oliver's backing, the "expansion program could be serious," according to Sebastian Müller, head of retail and real estate consulting at GfK Geomarketing. For Liebeskind's founders — Julian and Johannes Rellecke, sons of a shoe- maker in Westphalia; and Semih Sim- sek, a leather-goods production executive — the sale was a vindication of their long- time strategy of focusing on the middle market. With handbags in general now selling for upwards of $1,000 in designer boutiques, or for less than $20 in the fast-fashion shops, Liebeskind's middle- range pricing seems to appeal to consum- ers. Beyond pricing, though, quality leather and a casual design also make Liebeskind popular, according to Ger- man fashion critic Riccardo Simonetti, who writes a blog titled The Fabulous Life of Ricci. "It doesn't matter if you are a mother or a fashion girl, everyone appre- ciates the brand's products," he said. Oliver was founded in 1969 as a 250-square-foot shop in Würzburg. Founder Bernd Freier named the store Sir Oliver, borrowing the name from the title character of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, to add international pa- nache. Today s.Oliver owns or operates nearly 700 stores under multiple brands across some 30 countries. S C T
