NORDIC BOOM A WAVE OF NEW RETAIL DEVELOPMENT HAS SWEPT ACROSS SWEDEN'S CITIES By Anna Robaton WING LARGELY TO SWEDEN'S HARSH WINTERS, enclosed shopping centers have long been a key part of its re- tail landscape. The world's first enclosed center was built in the Swedish coastal city of LuleƄ in 1955, according to the Nor- dic Council of Shopping Centers. Since then, Sweden's shop- ping center sector has expanded at a fairly steady pace. Between 1996 and 2011 shopping center space there doubled to some 4 million square meters (about 43 million square feet), according to Cushman & Wake- field's division in Sweden. The country now has the second-largest shopping cen- ter sector in Europe, trailing Norway, as measured by gross leasable area per 1,000 inhabitants, 180 SCT / MAY 2012
