n e W s m a k e r s growing ambition HOLLY COHEN IS HELpING CLaIrE'S StOrES GO INtErNatIONaL W By Madhusmita Bora hen James Fielding became CeO of girls' accessories-and-jewelry retailer Claire's stores last year, he began proposing, among other things, store Cohen, for her part, says she considers civility and fairness key principles for successful business negotiation. "a lot of people stomp their feet and yell, and that's not effective," she said. "in this business you never know which side of the table you will be sitting on in the near future." after graduating from new York City's Fashion institute of Technology with a degree in buying and merchandising, Cohen headed for the city's garment district, where she started out on the wholesale side of the apparel business. she began getting a taste of the rollouts and the expansion of the icing women's brand into mexico, india and China. For such a strategy, there was one longtime acquaintance he knew he definitely wanted on his team: holly Cohen, a 24-year retail veteran and an iCsC trustee who is skilled at reinventing real estate portfolios. This past January Fielding brought Cohen in as senior vice president of global real estate and construction. she had held a similar job at J.Crew and also enjoyed a successful run at gap inc., where Fielding met her some two decades ago when both were district managers. "she's someone who's extremely professional, organized and with a high attention to detail," Fielding said. "she develops strong teams and is very passionate and goaloriented about business."
